History and its meaning

»On the evening of February 13th this year a catastrophe hit Dresden: bombs fell, houses came down, phosphorous streamed and burning beams crashed down on both Aryan and non-Aryan heads…«

describes Victor Klemperer in his diary entries from 1945 about the inferno that took place in Dresden between February 13th and 15th that year. In that time the centre of the city was as good as completely destroyed by four consecutive air raids. In Germany’s sixth year in World War II that had already killed millions of people, destruction had finally reached Dresden.
